L’Wren Scott, fashion designer and stylist, was found dead Monday morning of an apparent suicide in her NYC apartment.
Daily News reports that she was found around 10 a.m. by her assistant.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause of the death, but police confirmed the news this afternoon. “A 49-year-old female was found this morning at 10.05am at 200 11th Avenue. She was unconscious,” said a spokeswoman for New York City Police Department. “She was pronounced dead on arrival by the emergency medical services. The investigation is ongoing. We are awaiting medical examiners to determine the cause of death.”
Scott began dating Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in 2001 and a spokesperson for the singer, who is currently in Australia touring, said today that he was “completely shocked and devastated” following the model and designer’s death.
“At this devastating time for Ms Scott’s family and friends, we request that their privacy be respected,” a spokesperson for Scott told us. “There will be no further public statement for the time-being.”
Born in Roy, Utah, Laura “Luann” Bambrough was raised by adoptive parents. She started her career as a model after being scouted by Bruce Weber in 1985 while he was shooting a Calvin Klein campaign in her home state. He convinced her to try catwalk modelling in Paris, where she worked for Chanel and Thierry Mugler, and soon afterwards she changed her name to L’Wren Scott.
By the mid-Nineties she embarked on design and styling projects, consulting on costumes for films including Eyes Wide Shut, Mercy and Diabolique. In 2006, she launched her eponymous label after struggling to find the perfect little black dress – the name of her first collection. Her designs, which are known for their feminine and glamorous appeal, have been worn by stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman and Amy Adams.
“L’Wren Scott had a very clear notion of style which informed everything she did,” said Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. “It’s not easy making the transition from stylist to designer, but every year L’Wren’s recognition as a designer and creator of a brand was increasing.”
