Fashion guru Mary Portas has sparked controversy today with her scathing appraisal of the way female cabinet members choose to dress. “If I were PM,” she said, “I’d bloody restyle all those women. I mean, the female cabinet, what an ugly bunch. I would restyle them.
“Do you know, I could not look at them. I couldn’t look at them! I go in for meetings now and they do dress up for my meetings, but I just want to go, ‘Pleeease. No. Not that necklace. Not that skirt.’ ”
Home Secretary Theresa May, who is known for her daring leopard prints, and Conservative Party Chairman Baroness Warsi – once snapped in a pink and purple shalwar kameez – might want to take cover under a one-sized poncho today, as the full interview is published in heat magazine. But they at least have the right of reply. As the newest member of the Royal family, Kate Middleton is more likely to have to grin and bear it. Her status as a fashion icon is also torn to pieces by Portas.
“Is that fashion?” she questioned. “I think she’s done an incredible job globally, but I do not know how you can say she is a fashion icon. I just don’t get that.”

Sales of black mock turtlenecks, as worn by Steve Jobs at product launches, have gone through the roof. Has the death of the Apple co-founder prompted a surge in longing for geek chic clothing?
Since Steve Jobs’ family announced his death on Wednesday a steady flow of glowing tributes from the great and the good have flooded in. Big hitters including Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates have lavished praise on the man widely considered to have been a true visionary and one of the greatest CEOs of his generation. Given Jobs undoubted influence over how we all live, it’s really little surprise his death has triggered such an outpouring of praise. However, what is somewhat more surprising is that his geeky fashion sense has seemingly come into vogue overnight.
Rise of the (mock black) turtleneck. Gossipy website TMZ reported that sales of black mock turtlenecks, as worn by Steve Jobs at product launches, have skyrocketed since his death. TMZ interviewed a rep for the St. Croix clothing brand (which kitted out Jobs) who revealed that they’d experienced an “almost 100% increase in sales” in the first 24 hours after his passing. The grateful rep added, “we have a great respect for everything he did and we’re glad he believed in our American-made product.”

Kanye West finally unveiled his much-discussed womenswear line Saturday night (October 1) with a high-profile show at Paris Fashion Week that was as full of eye-catching designs as it was celebs.
From Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour to actress Lindsay Lohan, the stars were on full display for West’s show. Minutes after ‘Ye took his bow, we spoke to Ciara, who phoned MTV News from backstage to give us her take on the collection. And, yes, she was impressed with what she saw.
“It was amazing. The clothes, the feeling in the room, the energy backstage — it really feels special,” she said. “It was definitely one of the most talked-about events [of Paris Fashion Week], because it wasn’t going to be your typical show. This doesn’t happen every day, and to see someone like Kanye, who aspires to succeed in fashion, to get so much respect and cross over like this, it was monumental. It was an historic moment.”
While she was amazed by the fashion community’s embracing of West, Ciara was quick to point out that she was just as struck by his designs, singling out a few favorite looks.
“I loved the pants, the color-blocking and the orange, I loved the fur accessories, I loved the black dresses,” she said. “There was a lot of attitude. It was strong, sexy … I loved it. I kept seeing looks that made me think, ‘Oh my God, I want that.’ ”
Most artists make one big splashy video for their latest single and then move on to the next one. As she’s proven over and over again, though — most recently at the VMAs, where she stayed in her Jo Calderone character all night long — Lady Gaga is not most people.
After announcing on Twitter on Thursday that she shot five “fashion films” set to “You and I” with Dutch fashion photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, she unleashed the first clip later that day, “Haus of U Featuring Nymph.”
In typical Gaga fashion, it is perplexing, mesmerizing and just a bit odd, and nothing like the way-more elaborate, official music video for the rocking ballad. The barely two-minute black-and-white clip has Gaga pulling off a series of balletic twists and turns while wearing a simple slip dress and ballet slippers, her blonde hair loose and waving in the wind or up in a bun. At various points, there appear to be moths or some other kind of insect flying around in the background and lying dead on the ground.
Beyonce is claimed to have kept the audience at her London Fashion Week catwalk show waiting for 45 minutes as she waited in vain for her showbiz mate Gwyneth Paltrow to show up.
But at least the R&B queen may have been heartened to see such big hitters as – ahem – the Faiers sisters from TOWIE, Rachel Stevens and Paloma Faith in the crowd.
The Sun reports that pregnant Beyonce kept pushing back the start time of her House of Dereon (search us) event in the hope that Gwynnie would burst through the door – but to no avail.
A source was quoted as saying: “Beyonce halted the whole thing because she thought Gwyneth was about to arrive.
“She kept calling her but she didn’t show. People couldn’t wait any longer and they had to get on with it.
“Beyonce wasn’t angry. She was just disappointed.”
But she clearly got over it quickly enough, judging by the big grin on her face as she took the applause at the end of the catwalk show.

The Mirror Fashion Director’s verdict on Victoria Beckham’s 2012 Spring/Summer Collection.
If ever there was time to stop referring to Victoria Beckham as pop star ‘turned’ fashion designer it’s round about now.
Having just shown her spring/summer 2012 ready to wear collection at New York Fashion Week there’s no doubt that the fashion thing is more than just a flight of fancy.
Just two months after giving birth to baby Harper Seven, Victoria’s latest collection has received high acclaim from the fashion pack and her evolving label has established itself as one to watch on the New York fashion schedule.
With an urban edge and techno stretch fabrics that we haven’t seen before her dresses still featured her trademark calf and midi lengths and clever play on proportion.
Stand out pieces were the over-sized silk gazaar or silk satin parka and bomber jackets which worked well teamed with jersey body conscious dresses.
Grosgrain webbed straps gave the collection a modern sporty feel that’s sure to strike a chord with her growing celebrity following and her fans when the collection goes on sale next summer.
Victoria left her baby daughter outside because she worried that the catwalk show would be too loud for her. But something tells us it won’t be long before we see her in the front row.

She hasn’t had a legitimate movie role in years, but a photo of Hollywood hellcat, Lindsay Lohan was worth enough for a fashion week shutterbug to lose his press credentials over.
The drama unfolded at last night’s Cynthia Rowley show when the puffy-lipped Lohan took her seat just before the lights went down. As the paparazzi were rushed away, one intrepid photographer sneaked from backstage and popped a few pictures of the washed up actress.
Before Lohan could shield herself from the flashes, a security guard pulled him away and ripped off his credentials before escorting him out as the crowd roared.
Rowley, for her part, showed solidarity with Lohan by pointing and smiling at the washed up star after taking her bow.

With New York fashion week and her seventh collection just around the corner, the uber-mum who said: “Maternity leave – what’s that?” is already back in circulation.
Victoria Beckham took a trip to an LA shopping centre with baby Harper Seven – allowing the family’s fans to get another look at the cutie.
Now eight weeks old, Harper is thriving. She has a thick head of hair, chubby cheeks and her mother’s nose.
Because of a painful back condition, the stylish designer has been advised to ditch her customary sky high Louboutins.
She is said to have suffered a slipped disc when expecting.
A couple of days earlier, the former Spice Girl was seen in six-inch heels, but by the weekend she’d wisely traded them in for some ballet pumps.
Victoria, 37, teamed them with a sassy black mini-dress that showed off her already enviable post-pregnancy figure.

Sarah Jessica Parker commenced the fashion parade for her I Don’t Know How She Does It press tour today in Moscow. She was up for an early morning photo call on the roof of the city’s Ritz Carlton in a Prabal Gurung dress and later attended a premiere in a red gown and cape combo from Giambattista Valli. SJP should continue to rock amazing looks as she travels on behalf of the film in the run-up to its release here in the US on Sept. 16. Fans may be excited to see her tackling the working-mom role of Kate Reddy, while others still have fingers crossed for a return of clothes horse Carrie Bradshaw. Sarah Jessica’s latest comments on a third Sex and the City film make Carrie’s comeback seem more uncertain than ever. After saying she knows the story of the next movie, SJP recently revealed that there are no concrete plans to get the SATC girls back together any time soon.
